2012 IHSA 1A Girls Sectional Previews

The big question that most fans have been asking about this class is whether or not any team has the talent to defeat defending state champ St. Teresa? The Decatur school has looked dominant against 1A competition this year. Their only losses have come to 3A power Palatine at the Metamora Invitational and 2A Normal U-High at both Metamora and Normal’s own invitational.

Some of the questions will be answered this weekend as 5 sectionals are set to take place to qualify 25 teams to Detweiller Park. Here is a look at each of the sectionals looking at both the teams and the individuals.

Edwardsville Metro-East Lutheran Sectional

SIU Edwardsville XC Course – 10:00 AM

Teams

#4 Breese Mater Dei has been the top team in this sectional throughout the year and the favorite heading to the starting line on Saturday morning. They easily won the New Athens Regional last week behind 2nd place finisher Madeline Lager. The key to the team is keeping their split from 2-5 between 20-25 seconds. If that is possible, it would be hard for anyone to beat them.

#19 Freeburg advanced in the same New Athens finishing 3rd despite holding out on of their top 5 runners Lauren Mank and getting a subpar race from front runner Olivia Von Bokel. Both should be back at full steam on Saturday.

Red Bud won the Chester Regional by 8 points over Carterville last weekend. Both teams aim to get one of the 5 qualifying spots for the state meet. Red Bud has a good 1-2 punch in Senior Brittney Burmester and Sophomore Deanna Deterding. This squad has a gap between the top 2 and their 3-5 pack so having those three runners close together will be a key. Carterville will run 7 underclass athletes in this week’s sectional race. This team has improved week by week and will look for that improvement to put them to Peoria.

Edwardsville Metro-East Lutheran has an advantage by running on their home course. They also defeated a rated Freeburg team last week and will look to duplicate that effort on Saturday. Jessica Jump is one of the top runners on this team and could finish in the top 5 individually. If their 1-5 split is near 105 seconds, this team could qualify.

Roxana made their first appearance to Detweiller Park last fall and would like to repeat that trip on Saturday. They finished 4th in the tough New Athens Regional last week. Just like Metro-East Lutheran, they will need to keep their split near 100 seconds. Murphysboro has a shot also in qualifying, but will need to have a runner in the first 15 and keep their split on five near 55 seconds.

Individuals

Savannah Ames of Belleville Althoff has been tough to beat in this region this year and comes to the course on Saturday as one of the favorites. The one runner that will push her is Brittney Burmeister of Red Bud. Burmeister ran 18:28 early in the year at the First to the Finish Invitational and could be the one to upend Ames. Madeline Lager of Breese Mater Dei will also be towards the front along with Alex Singleton of Bethalto Civic Memorial, Deanna Deterding of Red Bud, Taryne Knuckels of Freeburg, Tori Fulgham of Roxana, Kaitlyn Schutt of Benton, and Jessica Jump of Edwardsville Metro-East Lutheran

Effingham-St. Anthony Sectional

Mid-America Motorworks, Effingham – 10:00 AM

Teams

Perhaps the toughest of all the Girls 1A sectionals with 7 schools in the top 25 competing headed by the state top schools. #1 St. Teresa looks unstoppable yet again this season. They have 5 runners that could place in the top 12 in this race alone led by Junior Rachel Devereux and Senior Ivy Handley. Last week at the Carlinville Regional, they took the first four places in scoring a near perfect 16 points.

#2 Monticello looked like they packed it up last week in the same Carlinville Regional when they scored 57 points. The week prior at the Okaw Valley Conference Meet, they only lost to St. Teresa 20-43. They have the great front runner in Hannah Houska that could challenge Devereux/Handley, but do they have the firepower to place 4 runners between St. Teresa’s top 5? We will find out on Saturday.

#10 St. Joseph-Ogden also looks like a lock to qualify to Peoria after putting in a great performance at the Paxson-Buckley-Loda Regional last Saturday only scoring 33 points. Regional individual winner Alyssa Pridemore leads a young team into this sectional with hopes of getting past Monticello. For that to happen, they will need to have Pridemore in the top 8 along with keeping their overall split close to 100 seconds and their 2-5 split near 57 seconds.

The final two spots will be challenged by 4 schools. #16 Mt. Zion rebounded after losing front runner McKayla Harder to an early season ending stress fracture. The Braves still have a great front runner in Megan Bailey but only 5 runners on their squad. They need to have their 2-5 split under 60 seconds for this team to advance. #17 Champaign St. Thomas More only defeated #18 Tolono Unity by 3 points last week at PBL. Theresa Welle ran a great race last week finishing 2nd. The Sabers need to keep their split near 105 seconds if they want to run one more week. #18Tolono Unity relies on a tighter pack than St. Thomas More. Freshman Taylor Renfroe finished 4th behind Welle last week and will look to be ahead of her on Saturday. Their 2-5 split is close at 25-30 seconds. If they can stay within 40 seconds of Renfroe with her in the top 6, this team may qualify. #25 Carlinville has a shot of qualifying, but will need a top 15 finish from either Lea Viano or Colleen Madden along with keeping their split near 140 seconds.

Individuals

Like we said in the team preview, St. Teresa could dominate in the individual race as well. Rachel Devereux is becoming more and more the one runner to watch in 1A girls statewide and could be the favorite here. Her teammate Ivy Handley and  Megan Burgener should be her chief competition for the individual title. Also watch for Emily Burgener of St. Teresa, Hannah Houska and Emily Foley of Monticello, Megan Bailey of Mt. Zion, Alyssa Pridemore of St. Joseph-Ogden, and Theresa Welle of St. Thomas More to be towards the front of the race.

Elmwood Sectional

Maple Lane CC, Elmwood – 10:30 AM

Teams

Another loaded sectional with 8 teams rated in the top 25. The team that his head above everyone else is #3 Rochester. They did get a bump in the road last week with a slight injury to freshman standout Megan McNicholas. She did run Saturday at the Franklin regional finishing 2nd behind teammate Taylor Bartolozzi. This is a young talented squad with the possibility of placing 5 runners in the first 20 on Saturday.

The one team that could surprise them is #5 Petersburg PORTA. The Bluejays have not defeated the Rockets this fall, but only lost to them 26-45 last week at the regional. Freshman sisters Maria & Adrienne Brauer have joined senior captain MacKenzie Griffin to make this team a little more dangerous. If their 1-5 split is near 120 seconds, this team will qualify.

#8 Downs Tri-Valley has quietly emerged as a team that could sneak into the top 2. They have a duo in Jess Clarke and Athena Kulb that could place in the top 6 individually on Saturday. This team will get in by keeping a 5 runner split close to 115 seconds on Clarke. #11 Elmwood-Brimfield has the advantage of running on their home course. They ran a great 36 second split on five last Saturday, led by Kenra Gorham, which could benefit them in a crowded field if they can keep that closeness.

It looks like four squads will battle for the final spot. #13 Canton has tough front runner in Madison Lefler and Nicole Beebe but will need a tighter 3-5 group in order to qualify. #20 Liberty has come on strong over the last couple of weeks led by Freshman Jacki Graham. It looks like a theme in this preview but their split needs to be under 120 seconds if they want to advance. #22 Eureka has also come on strong in the last few weeks. Mercer Mack could finish in the top 12 in this meet. If she does that and their split is close to 80 seconds, they could qualify. #23 Monmouth-Roseville looked great in winning the Macomb Regional last Saturday. If they can get either Brittany Daniel or Destiny Smith in the top 15 along with getting their split to 90 seconds, they could be a big surprise.

Individuals

All eyes during the year have been on Rochester’s freshman Megan McNicholas as she caught 1A’s attention by winning the First to The Finish Invitational in early September on the state meet course. It could be a closer race on Saturday, especially with her recent injury. She looked good according to reports last week at Franklin finishing 2nd behind teammate Taylor Bartolozzi, but it looks like it will be a closer race. Cassie Mundekis of Mantino Midwest Central dueled fellow sophomore Faith Wieland of Bloomington Central last Saturday at the Farmington Regional before Mundekis won by 3 seconds. Expect those two to challenge the Rochester duo. This could be a tight individual race with Madison Lefler of Canton, Jess Clark and Athena Kulb of Downs Tri-Valley, Naomi Springer of Stanford Olympia, Maria Brauer and MacKenzie Griffin of Petersburg PORTA, Karyn Paisley of Macomb, and Alex VanHoof of Bloomington Central Catholic close behind.

Lisle Sectional

Community Park, Lisle 10:00 AM

Teams

#9 Kankakee Bishop McNamara has been the top team throughout the season in this sectional and I cannot seeing that change on Saturday in Lisle. Freshman Cassidy Devenouges has been the lead runner for this squad that could run a 60 to 70 second 5 runner split on Saturday.

After McNamara, it is wide open for the final 4 spots. #24 Johnsburg surprised many by winning the Aurora Christian Regional over conference foe Richmond-Burton. For Johnsburg to qualify, they will again need to have their top 3 runners, led by Delaney Pruitt, to be in the top 12 in this race along with a 100 second split. Richmond Burton has a talented sophomore Meagan Spohr leading them, but will rely on a tight 2-5 split to advance them to Peoria. Luther North Regional champion Latin School also has the possibility of qualifying as a team. They have a tough duo led by Victoria Bianco and Abigail Nadler. They will need to have a split close to 140 seconds to advance.

The one surprise team this year in this sectional has been Willows Academy from Des Plaines. They finished 2nd last week behind Latin School, and could pull a big surprise by qualifying. Beccher, Aurora Christian, and Timothy Christian also will be in the hunt for a top 5 spot.

Individuals

The one runner that I would label as the individual favorite in this race would be Chloe Marshinski of Westmont. She is a big meet performer that will be towards the front on Saturday. Other runners that I would keep an eye on include Victoria Bianco and Abigail Nadler of The Latin School, Rebecca Wert of Aurora Christian, Maggie Arndt of Westmont, and Delaney Pruitt of Johnsburg.

Oregon Sectional

Oregon Park West, Oregon 10:00 AM

Teams

It should be a tight battle between #6 Winnebago and #7 Rock Falls. Two weeks ago when they last raced, Winnebago won with Rock Falls missing one of their top runners Paige Davis. Rock Falls should be at full strength on Saturday after dominating their regional and will enter this meet as a slight favorite. Winnebago has the tight duo of Cheyenne Moore and Rachel France. If they could keep their split close to 95 seconds, they could walk away as the sectional champ.

#12  Byron came close to Winnebago finishing only 9 points behind. They will need to have Kelsey Hildreth in the top 7 individually with a split of 67 seconds for this team to advance. There is a huge cloud over the #14 Ottawa Marquette team after their program was put on probation and their coach Dr. Dan Cheatham was suspended. The question will be how this squad will respond when the gun goes off. The Peru St. Bede Regional champs have a good front runner in Dani Aurit and could qualify if she is in the top 10 along with a under 120 second split.

#15 Rockford Lutheran came close to Byron at the Winnebago Regional and could finish in the top 3 on Saturday. Julie Buard is the top runner for this squad. They are capable of a 75 second split. If they can do that with Buzzard in the top 10, this team will be at Detweiller next Saturday. #21 Henry-Midland has been up and down this season. They have a chance to qualify but will need a 100 second split with someone in the top 12 to qualify.

Individuals

The one runner t watch would be Rock Falls Regional champion Regan Weidner of Manlius Bureau Valley. It should be a tight race with Cheyenne Moore and Rachel France of Winnebago, Katie Anderson of Rock Falls, Dani Aurit of Ottawa Marquette, Julie James of El Paso-Gridley, and Joy Hittenmiller of Rockford Christian Life close behind.

1A Boys & Girls Team Sectional Analysis – October 5, 2012

Instead of looking at the top 25 teams, let us look at each of the sectionals to see how teams stack up. I apologize in advance on some of the sectional analysis. I have not received some results which makes it tougher for me to analyze.

Edwardsville-Metro East Lutheran Sectional

Boys

Teams to Watch:        (7): #13 Freeburg, Sparta, Edwardsville Metro-East Lutheran, East Alton-Wood River, Bellville Althoff, Herrin, Chester

Early Outlook:      I wish I could give an honest appraisal of this sectional, but with the lack of the results that I have received,it is tough. Freeburg is the only ranked team in this sectional.

Girls

Teams to Watch: (6): #4 Breese Mater Dei, #13 Freeburg, Roxana, Carterville, Belleville Althoff, Chester.

Early Outlook:      See the above comments. Breese Mater Dei has been the superior team in this sectional all season and should be the favorite. Also watch for Freeburg; they should challenge.

Effingham St. Anthony Sectional

Boys

Teams to Watch: (7): #1 Champaign St. Thomas More, #3 Shelbyville, #5 Mt. Zion, #9 Monticello, #11 St. Joseph-Ogden, #16 Urbana University, #19 Tolono Unity

Early Outlook:      This was the toughest sectional last year and it does not look like anything has changed. St. Thomas More has run against some tough competition this year, but has not gone against some of the top teams in 1A. We should find out how good this team is on Monday at the Amboy Invitational.  Shelbyville has quietly climbed through the ratings to where they are right now, #3. This is a team that relies on a tight pack usually in the 35 – 45 second range.

Mt. Zion looks to be fully healthy. Jake Brown will be one of the favorites for the individual race. The Braves have the right parts to make a charge towards the stage at Detweiller. Monticello has done a great job in rebuilding after losing the core of last year’s state team. They will still contend for a state qualifying position, but will need to decrease their gap between their fourth and fifth runner to do so. St. Joesph Ogden, Urbana University, and Tolono Unity will fight for the remaining two spots.

Girls

Teams to Watch: (7): #1 Decatur St. Teresa, #2 Monticello, #9 St. Joseph-Ogden, #17 Champaign St. Thomas More, #18 Mt. Zion, #25 Tolono Unity, Carlinville.

Early Outlook:      It would be safe to say that Decatur St. Teresa and Monticello are locks to get to Peoria. St. Teresa could have up to 4-5 all state runners in their top 7; Monticello has a good pack led by Hannah Houska. Then, there are 5 teams that will go after the final three spots. Keep an eye on Mt. Zion the next few weeks. They ran a good race at Peoria a week ago. It has the talent that could possibly challenge Monticello, but they need to stay healthy.

Elmwood Sectional

Boys

Teams To Watch:       (8): #5 Rochester, #7 Elmwood-Brimfield, #12 Tremont, #20 Stanford Olympia, #22 Heyworth, Monmouth-Roseville, Liberty, Canton

Early Outlook:      I think that are three teams that are could be locks to make it to Peoria. Rochester has made a steady climb up the ratings this year and are the highest rated team in this sectional. Elmwood- Brimfield was highly rated but dropped early in the year. Each race they get better and better. Running on their home course could give them an edge in this sectional. They are a senior based team that could make some noise at state. Tremont is a team that has snuck under the radar during the year, but has the quality in a top 5 to make it to state.

The other two spots are clearly up in the air with 5 schools battling for them.

Girls

Teams To Watch:       (6): #3 Rochester, #10 Downs Tri-Valley, #11 Canton, #12 Elmwood-Brimfield, #14 Petersburg PORTA, #19 Liberty

Early outlook:       Six very good teams battling for five spots in this sectional. Rochester appears to be the team to beat at Elmwood, especially with the emergence this fall of Freshman phenom Megan McNicholas.

Lisle Sectional

Boys

Teams to Watch: (7):  #6 Richmond-Burton, #23 Chicago Latin, Westmont, Aurora Christian, Elmhurst Timothy Christian, Beecher, Herscher

Early Outlook:      Keep an eye on Richmond Burton. They are the clear favorite this year in this sectional but will surprise many at the state meet in Peoria. They have not run against the top flight competition like many of the top 1A schools have, but this suburban Chicago school has quietly built itself up to a spot to contend for a top 3 position at state. The rest of the sectional is wide open for the remaining 4 spots.

Girls

Teams to Watch: (8):  #16 Kankakee Bishop McNamara, Chicago Latin #22, Fairbury Prairie Central, Richmond-Burton, Elmhurst Timothy Christian, Westmont, Aurora Christian, Beecher.

Early Outlook:      This should be a wide open sectional. I believe Bishop McNamara has the most talent among the schools here and should qualify for state. Then 7 evenly matched schools will go for  the final four spots.

Oregon Sectional

Boys

Teams to Watch: (7): #2 Rock Island Alleman, #8 Winnebago, #10 Sterling Newman, #14 Byron, #15 Harvard, #17 Rock Falls, #18 Ottawa Marquette

Early Outlook:      Another evenly balanced sectional. Rock Island Alleman and Winnebago should challenge for the sectional championship.  With 9 rated teams in this sectional, it will come down to a 15 point separation between the final 3 teams. It should be that close.

Girls

Teams to Watch: (8): #5 Rock Falls, #6 Winnebago, #7 Byron, #8 Ottawa Marquette, #15 Henry-Midland, #20 Rockford Lutheran, #23 Erie-Prophetstown

Early Outlook:      Any of five teams could win this sectional. Rock Falls has made a steady climb this season and could be a dark horse to capture a top 3 spot at state. This is a deep sectional. There will be a few hurt teams that will not make it out.
