2012 IHSA 2A Girls Sectional Previews

Who would have thought that defending 2A champ Yorkville would be rated #1 heading into the sectional weekend? The Lady Foxes have put together an impressive season so far running up to 4 freshmen in their top 7. There are many other powers that have the capability of defeating Yorkville, but they need to get out of their sectionals first. There should be some quality races within these 5 sectionals.

Here is a look at the action throughout Illinois in Girls 2A on Saturday.

Belvidere Sectional

Belvidere HS, 10:00 AM

Teams

Three of the top 5 rated teams in this field led by #3 Marengo. This team made its jump up the ratings with strong performances at both the First to the Finish Invitational and a win at the Kaneland Invitational over #4 Kaneland and #5 Crystal Lake Central. Marengo has the great front runner in individual state favorite Katie Adams. They have good front runners in Allie Sprague, Katie St Clair and Kitty Allen, whom all three could be in the top 10 in this race. Their 1-5 split was at 120 second last week. With Sprague running on Saturday, it probably will need to be at 65 seconds for this team to leave Belvidere the sectional champ.

Kaneland narrowly escaped their own sectional with a one point win over rival Crystal Lake Central led by the individual win of Victoria Clinton. Their 2-5 split was under 60 seconds last week. It will need to stay that way for this team to win on Saturday. If their pack is within 75 seconds of Clinton, this team could win. Crystal Lake Central has the talent to win led by defending 2A champ Sami Staples along with Maggie Dadley and Mary Fleming. They could have 3 runners ahead of Kaneland’s 2-3, but will need to get their overall 5 runner split under 120 seconds.

Four teams will challenge for the final 2 qualifying spots. #12 Belvidere North has taken a cue from the boy’s team and has a chance to make it Peoria. Sophomore Carley Lutzow has emerged as one of the top runners in 2A and a key to this team. She is capable of placing in the top 5, but the team’s split needs to be close to 70 seconds for them to advance. #19 Rockford Boylan came close to Belvidere North last week and would like to surpass their conference rival at this meet. They have a smiliar split as Belvidere North, but will need Deidre Coyle, their #1 runner, close to Carley Lutzow.

#21 Vernon Hills got a scare last week at the Antioch Regional as #22 Grayslake Central was only 1 point behind them. The Cougars will need to continue their tight pack. Last week it was at 45 seconds. If they can do that along with Kristen Whitney placing in the top 13, this team could make its first state appearance. Grayslake Central has come on strong last week led by regional individual winner Korina Gomez. Their pack split was at 91 seconds last week. It needs to be closer for the Rams to advance on Saturday.

Individuals

It should be a great 3 runner battle between the defending state champ Sami Staples of Crystal Lake Central, Victoria Clinton of Kaneland, and Katie Adams of Marengo. Adams has the fastest 2A time at Detweiller this fall. She is undefeated and looks to be tough to beat. Clinton defeated Staples last week by 25 seconds. However, I would not count out the defending 2A champ. Staples has run some big races against great competition this year at Palatine and at Wheaton North. We should expect more of the same in this race.

Bensenville Fenton Sectional

Fenton HS Campus XC Course, 10 AM

Teams

#9 Arlington Heights St. Viator is the clear favorite in this sectional that is void of top teams. The Lions are the only rated team in this field. This will be a tune up for state meet for this team. I could see them scoring 25-30 points to win this meet.

After them, it is anyone’s guess. Probably the top challenger will be Chicago Jones Prep. The Eagles finished 3rd at the Chicago City Championships and have the talent to qualify for state led by Senior Julia Heller. Fellow Public League School Chicago Mather could qualify behind seniors Rebecca Colon and Marija Betinski. Chicago University has the great front runner in Sarah Curci, but will need to keep their split close to 140 seconds for a chance to run in Peoria. Chicago Resurrection, River Forest Trinity, and Elmwood Park all have the ability of qualifying for the state meet.

Individuals

It will come down to three runners for the sectional championship. Hanna Winter of St. Viator enters this meet with some of the fastest times out of all of the runners. Her teammate Megan Carroll along with Chicago University’s Sarah Curci will challenge for the top spot.

Decatur MacArthur Sectional

Hickory Point GC, Decatur 10:00 Am

Teams

I think there are three teams that will challenge for the team championship and four that are almost certain to qualify. #6 Chatham-Glenwood has looked strong the last two weeks winning both their conference and regional. Part of it has to do with keeping a 5 runner split close to 60 seconds behind front runner Lindsay Rogers. Conference rival and #8 Springfield has three runners in their first 4 as freshman. They have still performed this season led by Natalie Motor. They are close to Glenwood in regards to split, but will need to get close to 60 seconds if they want to have a chance to win sectionals.

The dark horse of the three teams is #15 Mattoon. They have a good front duo in Whitney Maninfior and Victoria Drake. The question will be can they run close to Rogers. The Green Wave also has a pack that has a split that is close to Springfield and Chatham-Glenwood that could pull off the surprise. #18 Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin could also surprise, but will need strong performances this weekend from sisters Meghan and Meredith McClain. Meredith is a returning all state runner who has been hampered by an injury since track. She has been coming on strong and will be one of the reasons why this team will qualify.

The fifth team qualifying spot is WIDE open. Carbondale, Champaign Central, Mahomet-Seymour, Highland, and even East St. Louis Senior are all within 15 pints of each other in my latest projections. All the teams have been up and down this season. It will be the one team that can put it all together to get the final qualifying position.

Individuals

In a field that has no “name” runners, a few could step into the spotlight in this race. Freshman Mercedes Elliot of Danville has been in the shadows of Normal West standout runner Emily Brelsfoard in the Big 12 conference. She is one of the runners to watch at Decatur. Lindsay Rogers of Chatham-Glenwood has the experience to capture this title as well. Runners to watch also in this race include Lauren Whitehouse of Mahomet-Seymour, Natalie Motor of Springfield, Meredith & Meghan McClain of Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin, Emma Chelsvig of Jacksonville, and Cassady Garner of Chatham-Glenwood.

Peoria Notre Dame Sectional

Illinois Central College – East Peoria, 10 AM

Teams

#2 Normal University is the team to beat in this sectional. Throughout the season, the Pioneers have been running with a great pack led by Sydney Billingsley and Freshman Shannan Supan. The team has the capability to run splits close to 45 seconds in a big meet and we may see that happen on Saturday. I just don’t see anyone else in this field getting close to them.

#11 Peoria Notre Dame has been improving during the season and could be a team that will get close to U-High. Freshman Maryjeanne Gilbert has stepped up to be the lead runner for Notre Dame. Their split, which is over 120 seconds most of the season, could be their downfall this weekend. #14 Normal West is running for a state slot and will get that if 2-3 runners Sarah Piller and Andrea Gordon can finish in the top 15 individually.

#16 Geneseo, #17 Galesburg, #23 Dunlap, and #24 Morton will battle for the two remaining spots. Geneseo ran a good race at the Galesburg Regional by placing their first 5 runners in the top 23. If their split is below 75 seconds this weekend, they could advance to state. Galesburg has front runner Stephanie Saey leading the way, but their gap between her and their 2-5 pack is over 2 minutes. It needs to get closer for them to advance. Dunlap and Morton tied two weeks ago at the Mid Illini Conference Meet.  Morton may have the advantage especially with #1 runner Bridget Carius, who is projected to be in the top 7 in this meet. Dunlap has a solid pack that will could beat Morton at this meet.

Individuals

It should be a great individual race. Emily Brelsfoard of Normal West should enter this race as the favorite. Stephanie Saey of Galesburg is coming off of a course record win at her regional and will challenge Brelsfoard. Sydney Billingley of Normal University is also a runner that has the talent to challenge the above two. Also watch for Bridget Carius of Morton, Natalie Waters of Lincoln-Way West, Shannan Supan of Normal University, Maryjeanne Gilbert of Peoria Notre Dame, and Emily Ford of Geneseo.

Wheaton Academy Sectional

Reed-Keppler Park, West Chicago 10 AM

Teams

At the beginning  of the year, Yorkville Coach Chris Muth let me know that his team should not be rated that high. He had some young talent that he did not know how they would perform once meets started. Well, the #1 Foxes are rated at the top for a big reason. Muth put four freshman in his starting seven and they have not faltered. Skyler Bollinger (a freshman) has been the top runner all year for Yorkville and will be up at the front on Saturday. Yorkville will be even more dangerous now that Senior Casey Kramer is back at 100%.

#7 Lombard Montini came close to Yorkville last week at regionals though Yorkville held out a couple of runners. They should qualify out of this sectional easily led by Theresa Connelly and Catherine Kitz. #10 Glenbard South was 1 point behind Montini last week. They have the talent, led by Diane Lipa and Jayme Schlenker, to surpass Montini on Saturday.

#13 Lansing Illiana Christian should also advance led by Senior Alexa Beezhold. Their split on five needs to be below 70 seconds for this team to qualify. #20 St. Francis has the inside edge on the final qualifying spot after their performance at regionals. Kate Roback and Jenna DiValerio lead this team. If they can keep the gap between 2 and 3 close to 40 seconds, this team will qualify for state.

Individuals

Hard to bet against Freshman Skyler Bollinger of Yorkville in this race. She only has one loss in state to Katie Adams of Marengo this season. I do not see her losing this weekend. Alexa Beezhold Of Illiana Christian, Erin Reynolds and Summer Pierson of Yorkville, Theresa Connelly of Montini, and Kate Roback of St. Francis should be in the front pack.

2012 IHSA Girls 2A Regional Previews

There are some great races that will occur this weekend as the march to Detweiller Park begins. Here is a look at each of the 15 Girls 2A regionals that will take place on Saturday.

Watch the WEEKEND PREVIEW SHOW

Belvidere Sectional

Kaneland Regional – 10:00 AM

A good regional both individually and team wise. #4 Crystal Lake Central & #5 Kaneland will battle for the team title at Elburn Woods. Great individual race between Sami Staples of Crystal Lake Central, Victoria Clinton, and Maura Beattie of Woodstock.

Antioch Regional – 10:00 AM

#16 Vernon Hills will start its quest for its first state meet berth as the team favorite in this regional. Grayslake Central should be the main team chasing them. Kristen Whitney of Vernon Hills and Danielle Griesbaum of Lakes should be the top individuals in this race.

Belvidere North Regional – 10:00 AM

#3 Marengo comes into this race as the team favorite, but will be pushed by NIC-10 powers #15 Belvidere North and #198 Rockford Boylan. Katie Adams of Marengo will be the favorite in this race.

Bensenville Fenton Sectional

DeLaSalle Regional – 10:00 AM

Only 7 teams racing in this regional, so all will advance. Jones College Prep is the squad to watch for the team title. Julia Heller of Jones should be the individual favorite.

Elmwood Park Regional – 9:00 AM

Should be an interesting regional as 5 of the top rated sectional teams will race here. Resurrection finished 4th at the GCAC last week and will be the slight favorite in the team race. Payton, Trinity, Elmwood Park, and Regina Dominican will challenge for the crown. Elizabeth Molina of Lake View should be the individual race favorite.

St. Viator Regional – 9:00 AM

Here again…only 6 teams running in this regional. #9 St. Viator is the big favorite in the team title chase. Watch for St. Viator’ Hanna Winter and Megan Carroll to battle for the individual race title.

Decatur MacArthur Sectional

Taylorville Regional – 10:00 AM

Apollo Conference champs #11 Mattoon enter this race as the team to watch. #24 Mahomet-Seymour, Champaign Central, and Taylorville will be the squads chasing Mahomet-Seymour. Victoria Drake and Megan Shaffer of Matton will be challenged by Laura Whitehouse of Mahomet-Seymour for the top individual honors.

Troy Triad Regional – 10:00 AM

Host #25 Troy Triad, Highland, and Carbondale will battle for the regional championship. Hope Elliott of Waterloo looks to be the favorite individually.

Jacksonville Regional – 10:00 AM

It could be a repeat of the Central State Eight meet a week ago as #7 Chatham-Glenwood and #8 Springfield were only separated by only four points. #20 Springfield Sacred Heart-Grifffin will also push their two conference rivals. Jacksonville’s Emma Chelsvig was the surprise individual winner last week…can she repeat that again on Saturday? Meghan McClain of Sacred Heart-Griffin, Lindsay Rogers of Chatham-Glenwood, along with Natalie Motor & Sophia Gullo of Springfield will be going for the top spot as well.

Peoria Notre Dame Sectional

Normal West Regional – 10:00 AM

#2 Normal University has been progressively getting better this season displaying a tight 5 runner  pack. The Pioneers will be pursued by #13 Normal West and #23 Morton. Sydney Billingsley of Normal University, Emily Brelsfoard of Normal West, and Bridget Carius of Morton will challenge each other for the individual regional championship.

Galesburg Regional – 10:00 AM

#14 Peoria Notre Dame, #17 Galesburg, and #22 Dunlap will challenge for the regional team championship. Also watch for Geneseo and Rock Island to contend. Maryjeanne Gilbert of Peoria Notre Dame and Stephanie Saey of Galesburg should be the top runners individually in this race.

Morris Regional – 10:00 AM

Lincoln-Way West looks to be the strong favorite in the team race. Natalie Waters of West is the individual to watch in this race.

Wheaton Academy Sectional

Wheaton Academy Regional – 10:00 AM

8 of the 10 top rated sectional teams are in this regional. #1 Yorkville is the favorite in the team race with #6 Montini, #10 Glenbard South, #18 Lemont, and #21 St. Francis close behind. Skyler Bollinger of Yorkville should be the individual favorite in this race.

Riverside-Brookfield Regional – 9:30 AM

Riverside-Brookfield and Joliet Catholic should be the teams to watch in this regional.

Illiana Christian Regional – 10:00 AM

#12 Illiana Christian will be the team to watch in this regional. Alexa Beezhold of Illiana will be the individual to watch in this race.

2A Boys & Girls Team Sectional Analysis – October 5, 2012

Every week I usually look at the top 25 teams in the state and how they ran. With sectionals getting closer and closer, I decided to look at some of the top teams in relation to their sectionals.

Belvidere Sectional

Boys

Teams To Watch:       (6): #2 Belvidere North, #4 Crystal Lake Central, #8 Deerfield, #10 Maple Park Kaneland, #13 Dixon, #18 Vernon Hills

Early Outlook:      Thank goodness that the IHSA decided to move Yorkville and Aurora Central Catholic out of this sectional. What once was a bloodbath is now just a very tough sectional on the boys side. Belvidere North, the three time defending state champion, is the marked team here. They have the powerful first three in Garrett Lee, Tyler Yunk, and Paxson Menard. Their key is having the 4-5 runners closer to the first three. The one team that could beat them is Crystal Lake Central. Alex Baker is a runner that could challenge Lee and Yunk. The Tigers also have a tough 2-5 pack that could be enough to upset the Blue Thunder.

Deerfield ran tough against Belvidere North at the Lake Park Invitational by being aggressive and having a tight pack. After running the Richard Spring Invitational with half the team sick, the Warriors are finally healthy and are looking to rebound for the state series. Kaneland looked strong last week at the Freeport Invitational. If they can keep their split under 60 seconds (last week it was 57 seconds), the Knights could be making a return trip to Peoria. Dixon & Vernon Hills could be battling for the fifth spot. Dixon has a good front two with Simon Thorpe and Cody Sondgeroth. The Dukes also have to keep their split under 60 seconds. Vernon Hills is a young squad that has moved up the ratings throughout the season. Kyle Whitney leads a team that hope s to make their school’s first appearance ever in the state meet.

Girls

Teams To Watch:       (6): #2 Marengo, #4 Crystal Lake Central, #5 Maple Park Kaneland, #13 Vernon Hills, #15 Belvidere North, #25 Rockford Boylan.

Early Outlook:      Marengo could be the big surprise in the state this fall. They have a great threesome with Katie Adams, one of the favorites to win the 2A individual title, Katie St. Clair and Allie Sprague. If they keep their 2-5 split near 60 seconds, this team could be tough. Crystal Lake Central is waiting to run against Marengo again. Sami Staples has shown she is one of the elite runners in the state after great runs at Palatine and Wheaton North. Their split on the 2-5 needs to decrease to at least 65 seconds for the Tigers to be on stage after state. Kaneland has sat in the shadows waiting for a chance at the above two schools. Victoria Clinton leads a team that is capable in defeating Marengo and Crystal Lake Central.

Vernon Hills is another team that has emerged this season. Kristen Whitney has been the front runner for the Cougar. Last week their split at Antioch was 77 seconds. That could be a recipe for success for this team. The girls team from Belvidere North is ready to emerge from the shadow of the school’s Boys team and could make it to state this year. Carley Lutzow leads a team that has been getting better at every race. Rockford Boylan could be the tea that misses out on state. It currently is rated #6 in this sectional. Their split last week was 89 seconds at Freeport. It needs to drop another 20 seconds for this team to contend.

Bensenville Fenton Sectional

Boys

Teams to Watch: (6): #1 Chicago Jones Prep, #16 Bensenville Fenton, Arlington Heights St. Viator, Niles Notre Dame, Chicago Mather, Chicago Muncin Prep

Early outlook:       This is the weakest of all 5 sectionals in 2A. It does have the highest rated team in 2A with Jones Prep. The Eagles could have the top 4 runners in this sectional. Fenton and St. Viator have established themselves as state meet contenders this fall and should qualify. The final two spots will be challenged by three teams: Niles Notre Dame, Chicago Mather, and Chicago Muncin Prep.

Girls

Teams to Watch: (7): #8 Arlington Heights St. Viator, Chicago Jones Prep, Chicago Mather, River Forest Trinity, Bensenville Fenton, Elmwood Park, Chicago University.

Early Outlook:      St. Viator is the only rated team in this girls sectional and the only lock to qualify for state. There are 6 other schools that will battle for four qualifying spots.

Decatur MacArthur Sectional

Boys

Teams to Watch: (7): #6 Springfield, #7 Mahomet-Seymour,  #14 Springfield Sacred-Heart Griffin, #15 Chatham-Glenwood, #21 Troy Triad, #24 Mt. Vernon, Carbondale.

Early Outlook:      For the team title in this sectional, it will come down to the tight pack of Springfield against the strong front runners from Mahomet-Seymour. Springfield has been close together most of the year keeping their split under 30 seconds. Mahomet has two great front runners that will place in the top 10 of this sectional Forrest Smoes and Jonathan Schaap. I think those schools are locks to make it to Peoria.

In the remaining 3 spots, look for 5 schools to challenge for those. Sacred Heart-Griffin will have to also depend on a tight 1-5 split. Chatham-Glenwood should qualify, but only if Marc Maton is healthy. Troy Triad, Carbondale, and Mt. Vernon will be hungry to grab one of those qualifying spots as well.

Girls

Teams to Watch: (6): #6 Springfield, #9 Chatham-Glenwood, #10 Mattoon, #20 Springfield Sacred-Heart Griffin, #23 Troy Triad, Mahomet-Seymour.

Early Outlook:      I think three schools are locks to make it in with Springfield, Chatham-Glenwood, and Mattoon. Sacred Heart Griffin could be with that group if Meghan McClain continues her successful recovery from an injury that sidelined her all of track season. Troy Triad and Mahomet Seymour should battle for the remaining spot.

Peoria Notre Dame Sectional

Boys

Teams to Watch: (8): #5 Normal University, #12 Dunlap, #17 East Moline United, #19 Pontiac, #20 Geneseo, #22 Peoria Notre Dame, #23 Metamora, Bloomington.

Early Outlook:      This sectional could be wide open after the first two teams. U-High has been consistent all season especially the last two weeks with wins at ACC & their own invite. Dunlap is the secret in this sectional that could challenge the Pioneers.

Six teams could battle for the final three spots. East Moline has two good front runners in Tyler Rasso and Austin Webster, but needs to get their split under 60 seconds. Geneseo, Peoria Notre Dame, Metamora, and Bloomington are pretty equal in regards to splits. The team with the best sectional race will get the chance at the starting line at Detweiller.

Girls

Teams to Watch: (7): #3 Normal University, #13 Peoria Notre Dame, #14 Normal West, #18 Morton, #19 Geneseo, #22 Galesburg, Dunlap.

Early Outlook:      U-High proved that it will be a team that could contend for the state title after defeating 1A #1 St. Teresa on Tuesday. Sydney Billingley leads a team that has been running 30-40 second splits. Peoria Notre Dame and Normal West are teams that could be considered in, but will need to be on during sectional weekend. The one team to watch is Galesburg. The Streaks have been running great of late led by Stephanie Saey.

Wheaton Academy Sectional

Boys

Teams to Watch: (6): #3 Yorkville, #8 Lansing Illiana Christian, #11 Glen Ellyn Glenbard South, Lemont, Wheaton St. Francis, Aurora Central Catholic

Early Outlook:      I think it could be closer between the first two teams. Yorkville is one of the top teams in the state led by Jake & Luke Hoffert. Illiana Christian, however, has become better behind the improvement of Sopphomore Nick Fiene. Glenbard South should qualify, but will they have John Wold in their top 7? Lemont has improved with every race they have been in this year; they could capture a spot. SCC Rivals St. Francis and Aurora Central Catholic should battle for the other position.

Girls

Teams to Watch: (6): #1 Yorkville, #7 Lombard Montini, #11 Lansing Illiana Chrsitian, #17 Glen Ellyn Glenbard South, #21 Lemont, Wheaton St. Francis

Early Outlook:      It could be the 5 rated teams that make it in, but I would not count out St. Francis. Yorkville has emerged as a surprise team, especially when their first four are freshman. If the Foxes get Casey Kramer back to full strength, this team could be tough to stop. Montini and Illiana Chrsitian should battle for the next two spots.
