Palatine traveled to central Illinois Saturday looking for a change of scenery at the Metamora Runnin’ Red Invite. They got to see some different places and faces, and also came away with a team championship trophy.

The 3A #5 Pirates placed four runners in the top 12, scoring 45 points to outlast 2A #3 Normal University (71) and 1A top-ranked Decatur St. Theresa (73). Moline (143) finished fourth, followed by 2A #13 Peoria Notre Dame (176) in the field of 19 teams.

“I really like the course, it is really pretty,” said Palatine senior Tess Wasowicz. “This meet has a lot of good teams and good competition.”

Wasowicz took home the individual title to lead the Pirates, covering the 2.94 Black Partridge Park course in 17:05. Wasowicz’s time is the sixth fastest ever in the Girls race at this meet.

Moline senior Haley Verbeke (17:17) earned runner-up honors, followed by Peoria Notre Dame freshman Maryjeanne Gilbert (17:23), Normal Community senior Carly Pederson (17:25) and Palatine junior Cassidy McPherson (17:36).

Decatur St. Theresa junior Rachel Devereux (17:40) finished in sixth place, followed by the Normal University pair of junior Sydney Billingsley (17:45) and freshman Shannan Supan (17:47), Palatine junior Jessica Lincoln (17:50), and Decatur St. Theresa senior Ivey Handley (17:55) rounding out the top ten.

“We tried to get out controlled and work together,” said Palatine’s McPherson. “We wanted to get a good race in before Conference.”

Palatine junior Liz Cox (17:59) contributed a 12th-place finish to the team victory, and freshman Sabina Yosif (18:24) cracked the Pirate scoring five for the first time placing 18th.

“We did really well as a team,” added Wasowicz, “but we still have things to work on.”

The second and third place teams in this meet need to be noticed, especially in this meet. Normal University proved that they will contend for the 2A state meet not only with their 2nd place here, but also their win over St. Teresa at their home invite last Tuesday. Do not discount St. Teresa. After two quality meets, they showed that they can compete with the “big dogs” and will be the favorite for the 1A title.

The Boys race had more drama than the Girls race held earlier. 2A #7 Mahomet Seymour put four runners in the first 14 and held on for a 1 point win over #5 Normal University 62-63. The story of this race may have been the return of Glenbard South standout  John Wold. The talented junior has missed most of the  meets this season with a lingering foot injury that he suffered during track in the spring.

He showed that he is ready for the state series winning the Boys Race in 14:42. He won by 9 seconds over Mahomet’s Jonathan Schaap and eleven seconds over fellow South runner Joe Singleton.

The boost in the return of Wold placed Glenbard South 3rd in this meet with 78 points. Wold’s winning time of 14:42 is the 11th fastest ever at this meet according to Metamora Coach Gene Jones.

St. Charles North Invitational @ Leroy Oakes FP

In the girls competition, #9 St. Charles North’s 3rd and 5th place finish from Ashley England and Kaylle Wessel was enough to hold of #21 Geneva’s tight 36 second split to win the team competition by 1 point; 46-47. Kendall Cast of Metea Valley won the individual race

2A #1 Jones College Prep did not run all of their top 5 in the Boys Varsity race. They did run Jamison Dale, who battled Micah Beller of Niles North the entire race. Beller nipped Dale at the finish line to win by two tenths of a second. Paced by Beller’s win and a 56 second split, the Vikings won the team title 63-100 over Wheaton-Warrenville South.

Naperville North’s depth leads them to own invite title; Sandburg’s Krull wins individual race

Carly Krull finishes with a strong 17:11 to win the individual title at the Naperville North Girls Invitational at DuPage River Park Friday afternoon. (Photo Credit: Michael Newman).

Naperville, Ill— The steady rain that fell at DuPage River Park on Friday afternoon bothered the spectators that were watching the Naperville North Girls Invitational.

It did not bother the #2 Huskies or Carly Krull of Sandburg. Both stormed to convincing wins in both the team and the individual competitions.

Krull hung off the pace that Naperville North’s Elly DeTurris set early on, then took off a little past the mile in route to a win and winning time of 17:11. The time was excellent considering the deteriorating conditions. DeTurris finished 22 seconds behind Krull in 2nd place.

Naperville North was without #3 runner Kimber Meyer, who stepped in a hole during a workout this week and had a slightly sprained ankle according to Coach Dan Iverson. Why risk running her on a rugged course such as the DuPage River Park layout. They still had 4 runners in the first 6 led by DeTurris and the 3rd place finish of Maria McDaniel.

“I thought we ran really well. I was very pleased,” said Iverson after the race. “It was interesting to see Alex Moton (5th place, 18:16) and how she stepped up like she did.”

For this deep Huskies team, it was just another checkpoint. Next week, Iverson’s squad splits up. The top runners will head to the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis while the next 7 runners will run in the Wheaton North Classic at St. James Farm. With this many quality runners on the team, it gives Iverson a chance to evaluate his talent in two high quality meets.

“The Griak will be a different course with different competition,” added Iverson. “We are not trying to duck competition here. We will still send a team to the flight meet. We have some good depth this season and we will see how we do there. We have a lot of decisions still to make in the new few weeks.”
